Should I Start my Career at Deloitte

Known as a global juggernaut and the biggest of the Big Four Accounting firms, whether it is by revenue or by the number of employees it is said, Deloitte triumphs over its peers. But you might ask what use is this to me? How does having the most employees help me decide if this company is for me? And I’d say you have a fair point. 

Though the title of this article indicates that it is directed to those who are at the start of their (and rightly so), the article also caters to those who are currently working at a company where they cannot see their career progressing to the next level. Further, even if you are happy where you are currently, I invite you to read on as you never might know one of the ways the knowledge you gain from this article might be of use to you in the future.

Now let’s go on a short ride. In this article, I’ll be sharing a few reasons why I think Deloitte is one of the best companies for you to start your career. 


You probably did not think that this would be my first point but think about it for a second. If you are at the start of your career and intend to have a long successful one, one of the most important things you need to cultivate is solid professional relationships. With Deloitte having the most employees in their primary field (employees who are at the top of their industries), you will not be afforded a better place to build a network of relationships. Such a network of relationships is particularly useful because the journey towards a successful career is not one travelled alone. Just as there are critical junctures in a career, there are also crucial relationships that help along the way.  Do you now see the above-mentioned importance of Deloitte being the biggest by employee headcount?

As a result of Deloitte’s constantly working on innovative projects with big budgets, early career entrants at the firm are exposed to senior leadership and leaders of their field and can learn from them from the onset of their career. Launched in 2011, Deloitte University (DU) is not like the traditional educational institution that you know of; instead, it is a facility where Deloitte’s employees, from recruits to senior leaders gather to learn and develop skills. DU is one of the most visible and important investments Deloitte has made in their people. Deloitte has invested over $300 million into DU; nowhere in the world has any other consulting firm made this kind of investment into their people, not even the other members of the Big Four. Just to make sure we are on the same page, DU does not offer degrees or the like.
